Working with Garrett

Hi, I’m Garrett Shotwell, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. In therapy, my goal is to foster a safe environment and for you to create space in your life. This allows for acceptance and integration of one's authentic self. For me, being let into your life is the truest honor- let’s create space together!

  • While I incorporate a wide range of interventions, here is a list of some approaches I use:

    Trauma-Informed

    Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)

    Existential

    Strength-based

    Person-Centered (Rogerian)

    Motivational interviewing

    Harm Reduction

    Humanistic

    Somatic experiencing

I approach each person from a holistic perspective, using empathy, insight and process oriented approaches to help people feel seen and tend to the parts that need healing.

  • I work mainly with individuals and adults. However, occasionally, I will work with couples and adolescents.

I typically service a wide range of clinical presentations, some of which include: symptom of depression, anxiety, and trauma - among others.

I work with a wide range of populations, specializing in LGBTQIA+ communities.

  • I am licensed to work with individuals in Michigan (In-person & virtual) & Illinois (virtual-only).

  • I love practicing yoga, which I like to integrate into my therapeutic approach. I live in Ann Arbor, MI with my husband and three pups.

The Illumination approach

“Wellness looks different for everyone. My goal is to reduce the barriers to trauma-informed mental health care to help you create space in your life.”
